Fablab, p2p and open source – sounds cool, but what does it mean, actually? This is to understand the geek talk and show off with your new knowledge at home.

How to tell

A #Geek from a #Nerd

An old philosophical question: what is the difference between a geek and a nerd? Well, first, if you have a genuine interest in this question, it means you probably do not belong to either of the two groups. Because let’s be honest: geeks and nerds have other things in their minds. Quite a lot actually. This is why one can easily be mistaken for the other: these guys are all about enthusiasm. So, who are they? A nerd is a person who can be excessively intellectual and passionate about a – preferably obscure – matter. They dislike frivolities and are well know for their proverbial lack of social skills. Geeks are quite the contrary: they tend to form huge communities revolving around one particular obsession that usually feels pretty strange to the outside, non-geeky, world. And you know what? At POC21, we have both: we want to take the best of each archetype, and get socializers to mate with doers, so as to give birth to a new breed of changemakers. Gerds. Or Neeks. Anyway, we’ll open source it.

#Sustainable Design

We need to be thinking about sustainability in everything we design and engineer, no matter who we are or at what scale our projects exist. Sustainable design requires a keen understanding of a product’s end users and context. Sustainable design uses greener materials and consumes resources responsibly. It considers the lifetime of what is being made and designs it to be repairable or recyclable. Its results should be energy efficient during use, and designed for disassembly and component reuse/ recycling at the end of their lives.

forking
what IS

#FORKING

Forking happens when someone takes a version of software or hardware and starts building on top of it independently. For example, if the engine of a TESLA car is taken by someone and adapted for a tractor, this would be forking TESLA’s open source design. This feature of open-source allows similar projects to meet a diverse set of needs. One persons idea becomes the basis for the work of another maker. This way projects are open to access and can grow in different directions.

#zero waste

Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to reduce the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them.

At POC21 everyone has their own bottle, to avoid plastic. Solar showers,to bring back to water to the nature, compost toilets for making the most of our own waste, and we do our best to reuse all materials from the workshops to create even more amazing things with it. This is a challenge for all uf us, but it defenetly nurtures our creativity and the enviroment.

#CIRCULAR ECONOMY

In a circular economy used resources are brought back into the production lifecycle without creating dumps. Its major criterias are restoration and recycling. Using the concept of circular economy, we at the POC21 camp focus on the traditional recycling system our ancestors used for centuries: Zero waste and by heating our shower water with the power of the sun: zero emission. For us, circular economy is an alternative to todays „take, make and dispose“ attitude.Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to reduce the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them.

#OPEN SOURCE

The term „Open Source“ started as a technical definition for sharing software code, but has evolved into a beliefe that everybody should benefit from the sum of human innovation. In recent years it has migrated from applying to to code, to physical products (open source hardware) and even culture (Creative Commons). At POC21 we recognise the potential of Open Source to share sustainable innovations and techinical knowledge. Everything is beeing documented and put online to increase the impace of the tools we are creating. With Open Source practices, we hope to build a more responsible, innovative and equal society.

what IS

#PEER TO PEER

Decentralized exchange or production of knowledge and resources.

Peer to peer (P2P) is direct and has no middleman. Communicating directly with others without having a company in between. At POC21 we are producing hardware that can be shared round the word peer to peer, for people. As well we share machines, knowledge, and do peer production and development.Rather than 1 centralized radio station, peer to peer would be like everybody having a walke talkie which can send and receive. These people can communicate directly to individuals or broadcast to the world.
